Our words are getting out.
It’s lunch time. Another dreary day in Edmonton, but as winter goes, this has been one of the easier ones. Port lends itself so well to evening respites around the fireplace it almost seems a shame that the fireplace has been rather unecessary this year. Fortunately, port also works well as a toasting beverage to one’s good fortune over the lack of cold, inclement weather. It’s a win-win situation!
Our words are getting out! Comments (ok…we have two so far, but on the other hand that’s a 100% increase over a couple of days ago!) are starting to come in and more people are viewing our little part of the internet universe. Tell your friends about us while sharing a taste of port. Hey! Super Bowl Sunday is next weekend. If you’re having company or doing the visiting yourself, then try a nice LBV – perhaps a 2005 Taylor LBV. Tie its black fruit flavors and spice notes to a nicely aged Manchego cheese…and you won’t care who wins the game.
Back in November (2011) the EPA had it’s first ever (hope-to-be-more-often-than-annual) official tasting. It was a horizontal featuring six classic 2003 Vintage Ports. Accompanied by a welcoming LBV at the door, rounded off by a fabulous 1985 Vintage and paired throughout with an excellent array of cheeses, chocolate, and crackers, it was an evening well enjoyed by all who attended. Some day we might even be able to get Roy Hersh (For The Love Of Port) to drop in if he’s in town. (Thanks Roy, for letting us link your very informative site to ours.)
For those that may not know, a horizontal tasting is one that has different vintners but all from the same vintage year. A vertical tasting is one that showcases one vintner through several different vintage years. We chose 2003 because, not only was it an outstanding vintage year, it is also still affordable enough to keep costs in line. I hope to have some tasting notes (as well as pictures) from that tasting posted here very shortly, so please come back soon.
